Being a skilled listener can: increase relationship satisfaction, make you more successful at work, help you improve your speaking skills. Factors involved in listening: situational distractions, source distractions, medium distractions, focusing on the message, bias about issue and speaker, listening anxiety/apprehension. Factors that influence listening: born or made, intelligence, anxiety/stress, negative attitude, culture. Ex. gender roles, attitudes, interest: content. Biases, stress, attitudes, external: thought-speech differential. Listener appreciation: experienced when a listening situation is perceived as threatening/difficult, interferes with ability to process messages, muscle relaxation. Tighten a single muscle, then relax it. Repeat for every muscle group in the body: imagery and fantasy. Recall a positive experience or imagine a relaxing one. Concentrate on all good things: mental rehearsals.
