Caring audience"s best interest in mind: can have one and not another. Types of ethos: intital, derived, terminal. Initial ethos: credibility assigned to a speaker prior to beginning a communication act: what influences your perceptions of a speaker"s credibility before they begin a speech, influences many things, influences on initial ethos. Halo effect if we like one thing about someone, we attribute other positive qualities. Several different effects: effects of the initial ethos in the classroom. Terminal ethos: credibility at the end of the communication act: don"t burn bridges, may have to speak to this audience again in the future, large immediate effects. Ethos/credibility influence many psychological, cognitive, affective, and comm. outcomes. Psychological and cognitive most important: small long-term effects. High ethos sources lose impact over time.
