Document Summary

Describe what hydrocarbons are and the different types (carbon content and hydrocarbon characteristics) Discuss the different ways geologists locate oil reservoirs. Explain the process necessary to form coal. Resource: anything employed for a useful purpose. Fuel: matter that stores energy in a readily useable form. Many resources that we rely on are geological materials. We need more more energy today than in the past. Kerogen is heated over range of temperatures, breaks down to produce oil/gas. Fluid injected to heat/push oil to pumps. Material that contains significant quantities of hc. Source rock not in the oil window. Organic sedimentary rock formed by deposition/lithification of organic matter (plants) Coalification: degree of change undergone by organic material as it matures from peat to anthracite. Ranked by degree of transformation of original plant to carbon. High rank coals(anthracite): rich in c, poor in o/h, more combustible. Low rank coals(peat): poor in c, rich in o/h, less combustible.
