PSY 451 Lecture 2: Living Systems
Document Summary
Living systems: every system has a boundary. Can be physical, mental, emotional, time orientated. Boundary permeability- how close you are from receiving information from environment. Healthy boundary permeability- use info from environment to best adapt to surrounding. Ex: sheldon from big bang theory has no boundary permeability because he cannot read social cues. Ex: cult member has close boundary permeability- believes 100% in the doctrine of cult: system functions. Control: like the administrative assistant of the system control. Regulatory: lets you know if behavior is in line with goals. Pain can be a regulatory function as well as police, laws etc. Energizing function: system needs energy to carry out its goals. Learning, healthy relationships, money can be energizing functions. Behavioral: takes things/goals/ plans and works with the other systems to carry them out. Transactional function: part of system that interacts with environment. Ex: trade, classroom interaction: boundary permeability has certain dynamics. Ex: abusive relationships: steady state functioning.
