PSY 451 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Autopoiesis, Learned Helplessness
Document Summary
Entropy in psychology: elements of the universe. More and more people are counting information (design or organization) as a fourth element of the universe. Ex: how is that vibrations from ones throat, traveling through the air at just the right time is able to be understood by another person: energy and information. There can be energy , but must be put in structured form to really make an impact on the universe: entropy and synergy. Tendency of unattended system to move forward disorganized state that is characterized by decreasing interactions among its components. Entropy is a measure of the quality of energy not available for use. Ex: closed systems, learned helplessness, lack of food. Ex: assembly line putting together a car. Synergy refers to increasingly available energy within a system derived from heightened interaction among its components.
