Personality paradox = people behave much less consistently than thought. Grow out of temperament evident from early age; determined by genetic patterns. Identical twin studies genetic factors = important in personality. The trait approach the difference between people can be seen among traits. National character different cultures have different personalities. Greater genetic similarities led to greater personality similarities. Too much room for interpretation; relied too heavily on his patients. Ego psychology stressed how unconscious conflict can be resolved. John bowlby people motivated by desire for connection/closeness with others. Phenomenology = study of individuals own unique experiences. Concepts too vague/unproven to be considered scientific accomplishments .
