SOCW 206 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Groupthink, Critical Thinking
Document Summary
It builds on the christian principle called the golden rule (treat others as you would) to incorporate diversity concerns. Platinum rule = the idea that you can"t tell what life is like for someone else until you have. Critical thinking requires an ability to distinguish between a fact, an assumption, and opinion, and a value. Fact = statement of what is or what happened that can be independently verified by empirical means. Assumption = an idea that is taken for granted or presumed for the sake of making an argument. Opinion = puts forward one particular interpretation or viewpoint when it is understood that other credible interpretations are possible. Value = a strongly held belief concerning what is truly worthwhile, right or wrong, and the way things are supposed to be. Evidence = refers to objects or information presented to the human senses for the purpose of supporting or refuting a particular argument.
