Broadway vs. Off-Broadway
How a show is determined to be either Broadway or Off-Broadway is determined by three
factors
Size
Location
Money
For a show to be Broadway, it should be located on the street itself, it should have 501 seats or
more, and the budget for each production should be between $1.5 million (for straight plays)
and $5 million (for musicals).
For a show to be Off-Broadway, it should be located on the New York Island, show have
between 99 and 500 seats, and show have a budget of ½ million dollars (cost increases when
including music).
For a show to be Off-Off Broadway, it can be located anywhere in New York City, has 99 seats
or less, and has a much smaller budget than either of the other two (anywhere between being
completely free, having a budget of $100, or having a budget of $1000, amongst other prices). A
majority of productions fall under this category.
“Broadway” can be anywhere. Ex.: Broadway in London would be in the West End.
Regional theatres are applicable to any theatre not in New York City.
Broadway Shows
Broadway shows tend to be more recognizable and family-friendly, and also tend to be based
on famous books and movies.
Waitress
An American Paris
Wicked
Finding Neverland
Tuck Everlasting
Fun Home
Matilda
Off-Broadway Shows
Off-Broadway shows tend to be wackier and have titles that draw attention and give off an idea
of what exactly the show is about.
