This course provides an introduction to key sociological theories. We will examine the historical factors and intellectual antecedents that gave rise to sociology as a distinct academic discipline and read classical theorists such as Marx, Weber, Durkheim, and Simmel. We also will investigate how the concepts developed in classical sociological theory have been critiqued, revised and/or expanded in contemporary sociological theories (e.g., Bourdieu) and inquire about their relevance in understanding contemporary social problems related to race, class, religion, and nationalism.
