Document Summary

In ann petry"s novel, the street she uses the literary tool of personification to illustrate the oppression that african americans were going through during the pre-civil rights area. The first character introduced to the audience abstractly is the wind. She describes it as it drove most people off the street (1) and did everything it could to discourage the people (2). However, she also alludes to the wind being an invasive character because of its, fingering and pushing like qualities (2). The wind could be perceived as the harsh treatment african americans had to endure. It was also personified to illustrate the oppressive forces of poverty and racial inequality. During the year of 1944, the sociopolitical climate of the country still had racial tension. Segregation was still upheld and made the lives of colored people very difficult.
