CRIM 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Individualism, Social Disorganization Theory
Document Summary
Each group in society is relatively isolated from all other social groups and is basically self-sufficient. Within these social groups individuals live largely under identical circumstances, do identical work and hold identical values. There are little division of labour with only a few persons in a clan or village with specialized functions. The solidarity of a society is based on the uniformity of its members. Closely associated with two theories: emile durkheim & robert merton. First introduced by durkheim in the division of labor in society 1893. Used by durkheim to describe a condition of deregulation" occurring in society at the time. Also used it to describe a morally deregulated condition in which people have inadequate moral controls over their behaviour. A society may be anomic if people do not know when to quit striving for success or how to treat other people along the way.
