PSYC24H3 Lecture Notes - 18 Months, Prefrontal Cortex, Mirror Neuron
Document Summary
>70% of adolescents aged 18 have had a romantic relationship in the past 18 months. These relationships often last over a year: there"s a stereotype that adolescent romantic relationships are quite short. Schulman points out that that statistically actually these relationships can be quite long lasting. These relationships occur simultaneously with an increase in sexual attraction: as adolescents are becoming more sexually attracted to their peers, these romantic relationships begin to take off. Adolescents also engage in sexual relationships with non-romantic partners (~40% of adolescents lose their virginity" with non-partners: adolescents who engage in sexual intimacy but with people whom they don"t consider to be like their boyfriend/girlfriend. While relationships may be healthy and provide emotional support for adolescents, they are also correlated with depressive symptoms (particularly amongst girls) In many cases, romantic relationships are emotionally beneficial for kids, but they also can provide some challenges that then lead to emotional turmoil: when studying emotion, we mostly rely on self-report.
