Document Summary

Textbook notes - chapter 1: the science of the mind (p. 2-23) Cognition: what you know, what you remember, what you think. When cognitive psychology was first launched, it was understood to be the scientific study of knowledge. Many, perhaps all encounters with the world depend on supplementing your experience with knowledge that you bring to the situation. Amnesia: cases in which someone, because of brain damage, has lost the ability to ember certain materials. H. m (henry molaison) had brain surgery intended to control his severe epilepsy; however, through h. m"s surgery, he lost the ability to form new memories (i. e. the death of his uncle) H. m was unable to recall any events that occur after his operation. Because of his amnesia, he had no way to come to terms with his uncle"s death and his grief could not subside.
