Document Summary
Skill 21. 3: understand differences among kinds of sources: primary vs. Primary sources are original documents, artifacts, or data that a researcher is actively analyzing. Research projects based largely on primary sources. Ex: analyzing the prevalence of gender stereotypes in children"s birthday cards. Each birthday card that is examined is a primary source. Ex: government documents, historical archives, slide collections, population or ethnographic data, maps, health data, and so forth. Secondary sources are works by other people who have analyzed the same or similar documents, artifacts, or data. Particularly at the undergraduate level may need to work with primarily or exclusively with secondary sources. Ex: doing research to establish your own stance on nuclear power, single-payer health care, or immigration policy, you will need to enter the civic conversation about these issues carried on in secondary sources. Ex: popular magazine articles, scholarly journals, op-ed pieces, advocacy web sites, and so forth.
