More than a century ago, the inhabitants in the Dutch East indies were attacked by a strange nerve disease now identified as beriberi. Infected persans last their appetite, developed inflammation of their nerves, and become paralyzed. The Scientist who first studied the outbreak thought that disease might be caused by bacteria. To find out answers to their questions and to understand properly the disease. the scientist obtained blood from beriberi patients and injected them into chickens. A control group of chicken did not receive any injection. After several days, the chicken injected with blood from beriberi patients fell ill. Surprisingly. even the control group suffered from the illness. Dr. Christian Eikman, a member of the group of scientists working on the disease, observed that before the experiment, all the chickens used in the study have been fed with whale grain rice. During the conduct of the experiment. the chickens were fed with polished rice. Dr. Elicman later found that whole-grain rice contains high amounts of vitamins B1 or thiamine. a vitamin necessary for good health. Thiamine is absent in polished rice.

Almighty has His own purposes. "Woe 11 unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!" 12
