Six Sigma's main objective is to eliminate defects and waste, thereby improving quality and efficiency by streamlining and improving all business processes. Like Six Sigma, Lean is a tool used by companies to streamline manufacturing and production processes. Lean's main focus is on cutting out unnecessary and wasteful steps in the creation of a product so that only steps are taken that directly add value to the product. The motives of both Lean and Six Sigma are to eliminate waste. The main difference between Lean and Six Sigma is that they differently identify the root cause of waste. Lean practitioners believe that waste comes from unnecessary production steps that do not add value to the finished product, while Six Sigma proponents claim that waste results from variation in the process.
