where do scientists believe the salts in ocean water originally came from?

Show more Show less

They believe the salt in the ocean came from salts and minerals being eroded away from rocks by rainwater high in carbon dioxide and the runoff making its way into the water system and eventually into the ocean. Carbon dioxide levels were very high in the past and consequently the rainwater became very acidic and was able to erode rocks and dissolve the essential salts much easier. The 2 elements in the highest concentration in this runoff were sodium and chloride, the ingredients for salt.
