Background and context
Symmetry refers to the division of the body parts of an animal along one axis. The type of symmetry found in animals is well-suited to fulfill their needs.
Animals are divided into three types based on the symmetry they possess:
- Bilateral symmetry – The animal is divided into two halves through the sagittal plane. The human body, butterfly, and crab are some examples of living organisms that display bilateral symmetry.
- Radial symmetry – The body parts of the animals are arranged around a central axis as seen in sea anemones, jellyfish, and starfish.
- Asymmetry – These animals have no symmetry as seen in sponges and fishes like flounders.
