Background and context

Alternation of generation is a term used for the process in which organisms show a change in the phase of a life cycle from haploid condition to diploid condition. In plants haploid phase is gametophytic and the diploid phase is sporophytic, therefore plants show alternation of generation i.e in every generation both haploid cells and diploid cells are observed.
