Background and context

Monocotyledons or monocots are plants that have one cotyledon and dicotyledon or dicots are plants that have two cotyledons. These two plants also differ with respect to stem, root and leaf characteristics. The leaf is the site for photosynthesis. The epidermis and cuticle of the leaf prevent water loss due to transpiration. The stomata are responsible for exchanges of gases and transpiration with the help of guard cells. The leaves also act as a storage organ for the food they produce.
