Background and context

Chordata includes vertebrates possessing vertebral column. Vertebrates can be differentiated from the invertebrates with some of the distinct characteristics. The phylum Chordata consists of the subphylum Vertebrata and it also includes two clades of invertebrates, namely Cephalochordata (lancelets) and Urochordata (tunicates).
