Background and context

A microbial community that is basically held together in a matrix that is gummy structured is termed Biofilm. These biofilms contain mainly polysaccharides that are secreted by certain organisms along with certain nucleic acids and proteins. Biofilms typically tend to grow by attaching to surfaces.
