Background and context

Nondisjunction is the failure of the homologous chromosomes or the sister chromatids to separate during cell division. It can occur at the three stages of cell division. They are due to the failure of a pair of homologous chromosomes to separate in meiosis I, failure of the sister chromatids to separate during meiosis II, and the failure of the sister chromatids to separate during mitosis.
