Background and context

The experiments by Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase confirmed that DNA was the genetic material and not the proteins. They used bacteriophage in their study in which the protein coat was radiolabeled by Sulfur and the DNA was radiolabeled by Phosphorus. Then the bacteria were separately infected by this radiolabeled bacteriophage and they were centrifuged.
