Background and context
In prokaryotic cells, external stimuli can enhance or induce a transcription pathway. The transcription in prokaryotes is regulated by a complex of genes called an operon. These are transcriptional units in which several genes, with related functions, are regulated together. Other genes also occur that encode regulatory proteins to control gene expression in operons.
