Utilitarianism is among the best known and most influential moral theories whose core idea is that whether an action is morally right or wrong depends on their effects. Proponents of this theory such as Jeremy Bentham believed that the purpose of morality is to make life better by increasing the number of good things in the world and decreasing the number of bad things. Bentham defined what is good by adopting the hedonistic view. According to hedonism, the only thing that is good in itself is pleasure or happiness. It is also Bentham who coined the famous utilitarian axiom, “Every man to count for one, nobody for more than one.”
