Catherine of seina and julian of norwich: both lived in the 14th cent. Normally men wrote stuff ex: monks and priests, not so much the women. 12-13th cent franciscans and dominicans: vow of stability but they are much more active in the community; these movements had female wings but not active, course in the 13th century new development arises. The women started to write and the term beguine was given to them. Its an explosion of women writiers: his notion is a vernacular form because its written in the vernacular language. In 1309 the pope moved from rome to france to a place called avignon and stays there till 1376. But she withdraws from this and goes into more private person in her room: age 21 she feels that god is calling her to be more active and she helps poor sick etc.
