HIS109Y1 Lecture : Rousseau.pdf
Document Summary
Perhaps one of the most influential thinkers of the philosophers. No one had the influence that he possessed. Failed to realize that most people needed structure to understand the material. Rousseau saw a return to the past rather than a future. Wanted a return to a society that existed before absolutism. Wanted to go to old principles which he believed weren"t being observed. Rousseau examined himself as a man trapped in society. He saw society as being corrupt and unhappy. Saw the world of one that had sever challenge. From the time of his birth, he was under the ideas of his father. There was a major disconnect in his personal life. Jean jacques didn"t like rules of any kind, and therefore ran away from geneva. Rousseau had trouble finding a steady job, and did well as a composer. Big break came in 1748, when he won an essay contest for a national essay question.
