Was one of the most dramatic events of european history. 1789 was a break from the values and institutions of classic european institutions. A new world would form after the revolution. Things must be looked at to determine why they happened. We would go from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. Clergy - had the least membership, and therefore only had 100 to 150 thousand people, rep less than. However, owned about 10% of the land and usually didn"t have to pay taxes. Worked by surfs, and good care was not taken for this land. There was a huge variation in of wealth in this area. Lower clerics - poor clergymen were of peasant stock who ran a parish. Higher clerics - bishops, archbishops usually came from aristocrats. Many of them lived at versailles with the rest of the nobles. They were looked upon with disgust and hatred. Any church property was to not be taxed under any circumstances.
