The process through which an individual acquires basic skills and knowledge about leisure and recreation. Ideal = socially and psychologically rewarding leisure behavior. People engaged in pursuits in their leisure time that is both socially and psychologically beneficial. There are certain times in our lives that are more important: childhood and university are very important. Exposed to new people, new activities, new pursuits, new choices. Imitation, modeling, identifying with the behaviour of others. Key people around is influence us (who we identify with send us messages about what"s new, exciting, appropriate/inappropriate, and we model this behaviour: called social agents. We decide who we want to imitate /model after and accept messages from. Can be anyone: siblings, friends, teachers, coaches, parents, etc. Convey what is acceptable and unacceptable leisure behavior. Convey this sometimes knowingly as well as sometimes unintentionally. Willing to change (ex. smoking is prohibited growing up, but roommate smokes and you take up that activity as well)
