Document Summary

Ivan pavlov (late 1800s, early 1900s) started this theory interested in the stages of digestion, which began with salivation in the mouth as food is first ingested. Made an extraordinary observation: dogs would salivate before the delivery of food in their mouth. When an organism learns the association between a signal and event, there is a contingency that has formed between the two stimuli. Classical conditioning in humans: lemons are sour, when you eat them your mouth puckers up. even when you just think about it or see a lemon, your mouth waters. Unconditional stimulus (us): any stimulus or event; occurs naturally prior to learning. Unconditional response (ur): the response that occurs after the unconditioned stimulus; occurs naturally prior to learning. Conditional stimulus (cs): neutral stimulus that after becomes associated w/ the us, comes to trigger a response of its own cs -----(contingency)----> us. Conditioned response (cr): contingency between the cs and the us has been learned.
