Very ancient way of dealing with erosion and leeching, involves cutting down area of forest and burning it, ashes provide nutrients for soil so that crops can be planted. Lots of land so technique was sustainable, more land available to cultivate. You allow everything to grow after cultivating and cultivate in another area. In terms of human energy, industrial is more efficient, less labour intensive, but more energy is put into food production due to the technology used, high environmental impact. Intensification: increase in labour output using more people, increasing the number of ours in order to increase amount of cultivation without expanding land. Horticulture: the growing of domesticated crops with simple tools and no draft animals; doesn"t involve industrialized fertilizers. Irrigation agriculture: depends on artificially constructed dams and ditches to bring water into the field. Industrial agriculture: use of machinery, human labour, chemicals.
