Document Summary
Nature and nurture, contribute to variation in cognition and behaviour. Natural selection: reproductive success, biological evolution, adaptive vs deleterious traits. Alleles: variations of genes (dominant and recessive traits) Hayflick number (1965): limited number of cell divisions. Genetic influences with intelligence, correlation between the two is controversial. Identical twins have the same genes, almost the same intelligence etc. Down syndrome: affected physical characteristics, and mental retardation. Cognitive impairments range from minimalistic to quite severe. Mothers in late 30"s early 40"s have increased risk of having twins and down syndrome children. More common for people with down syndrome to get alzheimer"s earlier than others. Only 1 out of 8 alzheimer"s patients are genetically linked. Huntington"s disease: condition that specifically attacks the brain. Impairment of chromosome 4, bigger the impairment, bigger the affect. Abnormal movements: chorea (rhythmic, involuntary movements), athetosis (limbs) Losing the ability to move one"s body as the disease progresses. Global cognitive impairment: dementia (impairment of memory, other cognitive abilities)
