Stroke is the #3 cause of death in canada, u. s. , europe and other industrialized countries. 1/3 to 2/3 of stroke survivors require rehabilitation (loss of function) Damage to the brain or spinal cord, problem with the blood supply to the brain. Brain takes up 20% of the oxygen within the body, only 2% of the body"s mass. Ischemic stroke: blocked blood vessel, blood unable to travel through (significant blockage) Diets with high in fats and cholesterol, lack of exercise increases the risk of stroke. Thrombotic stroke: artery has been blocked up and clogged (poor diet, lack of exercise) Embolic: sudden blockage that came from somewhere else. Blood may become caught in a blood vessel. Air embolism: travels through vein and becomes stuck. Blood clots that are sent up to the brain will cause a stroke. Hemorrhagic: bleeding out, diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), stress. Corrosive damage to blood vessels, weaken over time and may eventually start to bleed.
