Document Summary

Consciousness = the subjective experience of the world and of mental activity. Split brain = condition in which the corpus callosum is surgically cut and the two hemispheres of the brain do not receive information directly from each other. Used to treat brain injuries such as epilepsy. Patients still function properly but not normally. The right hemisphere controls the left hand, better with spatial relationships. The left hemisphere controls the right hand, better with language skills. Patients with a split brain cannot articulate responses but can pick up what they saw if their vision is distorted and confused. Interpreter = a left hemisphere process that attempts to make sense of events. Subliminal perception = information processed without conscious awareness. Used in advertisements to make people buy products. Freudian slip = where an unconscious thought is suddenly expressed at an inappropriate time and/or in an inappropriate social context.
