Commodore perry sailed to tokyo bay with warships in 1853 to force japan to sign a trade treaty. Japanese emperor overseeing this reformation was mutsuhito (emperor meiji 1867-1912) Followed british model of parliament and navy. Schools and barracks were under american model. Law courts designed by french and german jurists. The japanese state was leaning towards an authoritarian state. 1894-1895 first sino-japanese war, formosa (taiwan) and korea was given to the japanese. Victory over russia 1904-1905 in the russo-japanese war. Port arthur was given to japan, as well as the lower half of the sakhalin islands as a result of the conflict. 1914 during wwi, japan seized german property and concessions in the far east. By taking over manchuria, it will strengthen japanese power. By attacking manchuria, japan leaves the league of nations as a result. Puppet government in manchuria, manchukuo established under puyi. China acknowledged the loss of manchuria, undertook further military (1935) and financial reforms (1932).
