Family: those who are related by blood, adoption, by marriage, and those that become unofficially adopted after a certain close-ness is achieved. Family of origin: who you grew up with. Family of procreation: who you live with as an adult. Communication is a process that involves creating, negotiating, and sharing meaning. Families have a major influence on how we learn to communicate with others. How do we define family: biological definitions. Important in child custody, inheritance, insurance etc: scholarly. What does it mean to behave like a family . Family of origin versus family of choice. Fictive kin: a family is a social group of two or more persons characterized by ongoing interdependence with long-term commitments that stem from blood, law or affection. What does dialectic mean: two things are interdependent but they seem to negate one another. Three primary dialectics: autonomy/connection, privacy/openness, novelty/predictability. Ways to manage dialectics: selection: chose one or the other, separation.
