We have been locking up non-violent drug offenders for longer before than. Imprisoning non-violent drug offenders for long periods of time cost the tax payers money without making them any safer. 1/3rd of the justice department"s budget is towards incarceration. Every dollar spent on keeping them in prison is a dollar they can"t spend on hiring more police, investigating violent offenders, etc.
