Document Summary

The proscenium arch = where the curtain hangs. Fourth wall: imaginary, actors dont break past this wall and talk to the audience ever. Apron: the area in front of the curtain. Scenery, special effects and lighting instruments can be concealed from audience. Wings all for easy entrances and exits for actors/scenery. Actors only have to worry about the audience seeing and hearing them from one angle. Extends into the audience on 3 sides but connected to a back stage. Allows intimacy w/ audience while allowing a backstage. Actors can enter where the audience does and from the backstage. Globe theater and all elizabethan stages were thrust. It is surrounded by audiences on all sides. Not connected to a stage house or a stage area. You can see the smaller parts of the performance. Difficult to light and design because audience has to see action from all sides. Actors cant keep their back to one side for too long.
