For sigmund freud (1856-1939), notions of individual subjectivity, identity and consciousness are born out of an essential opposition between the pleasure principle and the reality principle. The reality principle represents the constant restriction of desire according to possibility, law and social convention. Repression, proposed by freud, is the process of mentally containing our desires below conscious recognition or expression. The fact that the reality principle forbids certain desires and pleasures does not purge them from our minds, so individuals repress those desires into the unconscious in order to manage the tension between these principles. Pre-linguistic; perceived connection to everything: the mirror stage a child catches its reflection and misrecognizes itself as an autonomous and total whole.
