Plague is a bacterium and didn"t have a microscope. Had no means to find out what caused the disease. Hygiene wasn"t complementally back then so it was easy for bacteria to attack. Without cyanobacteria there would not be enough oxygen. Start off with low oxygen, and only rose when there was a small cyanobacteria growth. Bacteria can live 1km below the earth"s surface. They have a different biochemistry from te organism we are used to that live on the surface. Archaea specialize on living in places that seem impossible. There are places where the sun don"t shine. 2000 meter water depth (no sun whatsoever) therefore pitch black. They have to rely on completely different way of living and surviving. Have huge number of prokaryotes living in groups down there.
