Stream of consciousness coined by william james, american philosopher. Concerned with how the human mind encountered the universe. Literary realism is the idea that literature should record life as it more or less as it actually lived plot should be believable. Characters should be average people, not necessarily heroes, or kings or queens. Characters should speak the way in which human beings speak as opposed to grandiose poetic speeches. Henry james, brother of william, finds the way we see life is subjective we see the world as we want to see it. Our perception of the world is unclear then. Free indirect course is a way of an omniscient narrator allowing the reader into the character"s mind. Appears to be most reliable of all narrators. Seems to know stuff about the other characters other characters are aware of this as they try to keep him away. Actions after death show that he doesn"t really care for his mother.
