Document Summary

Scientific method: experimentation: explore observations and answer questions, search for cause and effect relationships in nature, systematic, objective, analytical and interpretative, reproducible. Empiricism: theories should be based on our observations. Operationalize: process of defining a vague concept in order to clearly distinguishable or measurable, objectivity, measurement, positivism. Causation is based on strength, consistency, specificity, temporality, biological gradient, plausibility, coherence, experimental evidence and analogy. Confounders; factors that mask an actual association or falsely demonstrate an apparent association. Effect modifier: factor that impacts the estimate of the effect of one factor on a disease process. Grounded theory: process of discovering theory from data that is systematically gathered and analyzed inductive phase & deductive phase. Positivism: behavior is a reaction to external stimuli; use surveys, experimental methods and statistical techniques to measure. Functionalism: a positivist approach that focuses on the social system. Outcomes: dysfunctional (interfere with the values), functional (contribute to functioning) Determinism: individuals have little control or free choice.
