Music for 18th & 19th centuries from vienna, austria city associated with 3 of the most influential musicians of the classical period: franz joseph haydn (1732-1809, wolfgang amadeus mozart (1756-1791, ludwig van beethoven (1770-1827) Haydn: born in rohrau, austria, mozart called him papa haydn, once kicked out of choir since couldn"t maintain soprano voice, becomes freelance musician with no patron, age 29 entered service for esterhazy family. Symphonies: considered largely responsible for codifying structure of string quartet. Symphony: multi-movement instrumental genre for orchestra alone: no featured soloist, predecessors are opera overture & dance suite, usually has 4 movements. Orchestra: based around a core of bowed strings; played at least 4 separate parts. Winter 2013: generally larger than baroque orchestra, but much smaller than those from. 19th century: no longer contained basso continuo section continuo players still in opera orchestras. Keyboards included in classic & romantic orchestras but not orchestral genres like symphony.
