Marriage bust in industrialized countries: has there been a bust in marriage, alternative types, not traditional marriage. Decision to marry past vs. today: increase in divorce, getting married later, role of external circumstances vs. personal choice. Historically, we seen ups and downs of marriage rates (that"s because of wars, recessions) But personal choice that"s today"s society; changes in individualism. Marriage used to be compulsory (expected to get married social norm: common law relationships and raising children outside of matrimony, single parent households, same-sex households (see box on page 170) First marriage has been a key variable of study. Nuptiality as process: movement across marital states (fig 5. 1) Crude divorce rate= number of divorces/population *1000: denominator is the overall population, and not just the population that is at risk of divorce. So we want to restrict our denominator (make more narrow) to apply it more. To get married, need to be singled, divorced or widowed.
