FRHD 1020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Physical Abuse, Religious Abuse, Minority Stress
Document Summary
Some canadian families have to deal with extra baseline stress: Conflict is an expressed struggle between at least two interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce resources, and interference from others in achieving their goals. Interdependence: people who are not dependent upon each other. Perceived incompatible goals: this is what we fight about. Partners have a choice in how they respond to conflict: choices may be informed foresight, choices may about be from guesswork, mindlessness, or habit. Factors that explain why partners choose one strategy rather than another: situational factors are things like third parties. Friends or family members or anyone outside the conflict who has opinions or suggestions. They are within the situation and they try to influence the person to act a certain way: structural arrangement. We think of gender roles and different roles in society and who has power in the relationship etc. this all decides what conflict solution strategy we are going to use.
