Remember that journalists still have a role as the gatekeepers we decide what is and what isn"t news to an extent. News should be above all things creditable. Serious subject include impact on people, death, injuries and changes in law. Institutions such as religions, ethnicities, cultures and languages are affected. An event appears to fall out of what"s statistically normal. The well-being of citizens is affected (health, the environment and natural disasters. A political system can be affected by the passing or changing of law. Business, commerce, employment, government budgets or macroeconomic trends are affected. When covering panels remember to ask the following : Did someone say something that hasn"t been said before. Ask questions that have not been answered. Also use: point of emphasis and active verb construction. Your point of emphasis needs to be one of the 5ws.
