Document Summary

Modern periodic table: as you go down a column, it indicates similar chemical properties because the valence electron configurations are the same (1s, 2s, 1p, etc. ) But groups iiia, iva, va, and via have more diversity because they include metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. Metalloids: metalloids have some properties of metals and nonmetals, they form amphoteric oxides and often behave as semiconductors, a basic feature of metals is that they conduct heat and electricity very (cid:449)ell. They"re usually shi(cid:374)y a(cid:374)d stuff like that, (cid:449)hereas these semiconductors, at low temperatures, hardly conduct electricity at all, but when you heat them up they start to conduct electricity: n-type and p-type semiconductors, silicon wafers, etc. Heavier elements further down the periodic table are more flexible in their coordination and which ions they can make. It can make ionic and molecular compounds: tin and lead are typical metals. Carbon (group iva: diamond, graphite, fullerenes, these are all different stable phases of carbon.
