Kinesiology 1070A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Arthroscopy, Pain Scale, Therapeutic Irrigation
Document Summary
Placebo- the measurable, observable, or felt improvement in health not attributed to treatment (taking a sugar pill that you believe will help you get better) Psychological theory- belief in the treatment or to a subject feeling of improvement. The critical factor is our beliefs about what"s going to happen to us". Placebos cause the brain to release endogenous opioids or endorphins, that reduce pain. Showing attention, to the patient triggers physical reactions in the body which reduce stress and promote healing (better immune system) Arthroscopic surgery- damaged cartilage is scarped (debridement) or flushed out (lavage) with the aid of a viewing scope. Patients feel less pain and can function better because of the placebo effect not the surgery. Implications: ethnical issues- deceit of sham surgery vs. false benefits of the actual surgery.
