PSYC 2500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Dionne Quintuplets, Sex Selection, Amniotic Sac
Document Summary
Begins when egg is fertilized in the fallopian tube. Rapid cell division happens as it travels down the fallopian tube. After the egg is implanted in the wall of the uterus there is officially a pregnancy. If the egg is not fertilized it gets released through the uterus via period. Blastocyst= fetalized egg 4 days after conception, consists of about 100 cells and resembles a hollow ball. Germ disc= a small cluster of cells near the center of the zygote that develops into the baby. Placenta= the structure through which nutrients and wastes are exchanged between the mother and the developing child. Sperm determines the gender of the baby. Pregnancy tests look for the presence of a hormone which is produced by the placenta. The placenta begins developing after the fertilized egg is implanted in uterine wall. This happens about 6 days after conception. First known quintuplets to survive child birth. Became an attraction, grew up in public eye.
